Meet mythical creature Tengu and feel power at Mt. Takao in Tokyo

Mt. Takao (Takao-san) has been a sacred mountain for over 1,200 years. It is home to Yakuo-in Temple, founded in the 8th century as a site of Buddhist and Shugendo (mountain asceticism) worship.

The mountain has long been associated with Tengu, mythical creatures believed to protect the area and guide spiritual seekers.

Located just an hour from central Tokyo, Mount Takao stands at 599 meters and offers breathtaking natural scenery.

Rich Biodiversity.Home to over 1,600 plant including sacred very big cedar trees, species and diverse wildlife.

Multiple Hiking Trails:

The beginner-friendly route:

Take the cable car partway up the mountain, then continue on foot toward the summit.

Along the way, the trail splits into two: the Onnazaka (“women’s slope”) and the Otokozaka (“men’s slope”). Both paths lead to the same destination. Onnazaka is a gentle incline, while Otokozaka is a steep staircase.

I recommend taking the Otokozaka on the way up for a sense of accomplishment, then coming down via the Onnazaka to enjoy a more relaxed walk surrounded by nature.

If you start walking from the base:

The most popular is Trail No. 1, a paved path leading to the summit. But I like No. 6, as trekking along the narrow river and breathtaking area in forest for 100mins.

The cable car takes passengers from the base of the mountain to an altitude of 472 meters, offering a comfortable and scenic ride.
