Morito Shrine (森戸神社, Morito Jinja) was founded in 1180 by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate.


He established the shrine to pray for the prosperity and protection of his new government and dedicated it to the deities Ōyamatsumi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto.

The shrine has long been revered by the samurai class and local fishermen, who worshipped there for maritime safety, bountiful catches, and family well-being.


Due to its association with Yoritomo and its strategic seaside location,

Morito Shrine holds significant cultural and historical value.

Morito Shrine is situated on a scenic stretch of the Sagami Bay, offering spectacular views of the sea and, on clear days, Mt. Fuji. The shrine’s location makes it a popular spot for both spiritual visits and sightseeing.

One of its iconic features is the red bridge over to the seaside.
