Dry-style Gyudon (Beef Bowl) Recipe – Serves 2

What is Gyudon?

Gyudon (Beef Bowl) is a classic Japanese dish made with thinly sliced beef and onions simmered in a sweet and savory sauce, served over a bowl of rice. It’s simple yet incredibly delicious, making it a favorite among people of all ages. Be sure to try this authentic taste of Japan!

Ingredients:

250g thinly sliced beef
1/2 onion
Cooked Japanese rice

Seasoning (★):
4 tbsp soy sauce
3 tbsp sake
3 tbsp mirin
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp granulated dashi
A little water

Instructions:
Step1- Add the sliced onion and all the seasoning (★) to a pot. Simmer over medium heat for about 2 minutes.

Step2- Once the onion softens, add the sliced beef while breaking it apart. Cook over high heat for about 2 minutes.

Step3- When the beef is fully cooked, turn off the heat.

Step4- Serve the beef mixture, including the sauce, over a bowl of rice.

This recipe is different from a typical gyudon (beef bowl). It has a shorter cooking time and is incredibly simple to make. Since it uses less sauce, the flavor soaks into the beef more, making it even more delicious.

It can be a bit challenging to make outside of Japan, where Japanese seasonings are harder to find. However, soy sauce, sake, and mirin are essential for Japanese cooking and can be used in many other Japanese dishes as well.

On this blog, I’ll be sharing more easy and delicious home-style Japanese recipes. I highly recommend getting these ingredients and giving this recipe a try!
