Yanaka Ginza is a historic and nostalgic shopping street located in Tokyo’s Yanaka area, known for its charming Showa-era atmosphere and cultural significance.
Located just a 5-minute walk from both Nippori and Sendagi Stations.

Nostalgic Old-Tokyo Atmosphere
Yanaka Ginza preserves the shitamachi (old downtown) feel of Tokyo, which has largely disappeared in other parts of the city due to modernization.
Unlike bustling shopping districts like Shinjuku or Shibuya, it retains a relaxed, local vibe, with small, family-run businesses and friendly shop owners.
Many of the buildings and storefronts have remained unchanged for decades, giving visitors a taste of Showa-era Tokyo (1926–1989).
Yanaka is famous for its large population of stray cats, which have become a beloved symbol of the area.
A well-known attraction is Maneki-Neko (Lucky Cat) statues, which can be found in various shops, as the cat is considered a symbol of good luck in Japan.

Traditional & Affordable Street Food
- Yanaka Ginza is a great place to enjoy authentic Japanese street food at reasonable prices. Some must-try treats include:
- Menchi Katsu (crispy minced meat cutlet) – this is one of the most famous snacks in the area.
- Taiyaki (fish-shaped pastry filled with sweet red bean paste) – A traditional Japanese dessert loved by locals.
- Yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) – Served fresh from street-side stalls.
- Shaved Ice (Kakigori) – A refreshing treat in summer, available in various flavors.

Retro Shopping & Handcrafted Goods
- The street has around 60 small shops, many of which have been operating for decades, selling:
- Traditional Japanese sweets and snacks.
- Handmade ceramics and tableware.
- Second-hand kimono shops with unique, affordable finds.
- Old-school toy stores with retro Japanese games and collectibles.
- Locally made crafts and accessories, including hand-painted fans and fabric goods.
- Unlike mass-produced souvenirs found in tourist hotspots, Yanaka Ginza specializes in one-of-a-kind, handmade goods.

Yanaka Ginza remains relatively quiet and relaxed.
Many of the shops are family-run for generations, adding to the sense of community and warmth.

Unlike major tourist attractions, shopkeepers often take time to chat with customers, sharing stories about their products and the area’s history.

Yanaka Ginza
History
Yanaka developed as a temple town during the Edo period (1603-1867), with prominent temples like Tennoji and Kaneiji still present today. The area reflects Tokyo’s rich history, blending ancient traditions with modern-day charm. Yanaka Ginza itself became a hub for local shops and artisans, preserving the retro feel of Tokyo’s Showa period (1926–1989).
